L'eyrie
Vers le Crêt de Chambellon
L'eyrie
Project Description:
A bird seeks shelter similar to that of a human, searching for a space to feel securely bound but in itself unconfined between its walls. The Project L’Eyrie derives from the definition of an eyrie, which is the nest of a bird of prey usually built high up in the mountains. Alternatively, the definition can also be used to describe as a place a high from which someone can observe what is below them. L’Eyrie offers both as such, a place to be hidden or a place to be seen. Its strong form references neighbouring typologies and patterns of the villages, its structure grows below like a tree uprooting from the ground.
The surrounding area of the site provides a strong base to build a concept. Textures and materials of the neighbering buildings inspire the cabin. Wooden beams extrude from posts, intersecting patterns weave through the village. The cabins form mimics elements of the typologies of Verchères, sloping sheltered roofs. Past the hill at the base of the valley is Château de Faverges a old fortified castle which overlooks the village. The cabin draws inspiration from each of these sources to create a fitting project for the landscape.
The base of the cabin creates a protected space with an opening out onto the land, a space to reflect, unwind and feel guarded between its wooden structure. Meanwhile the upper level offers a platform, a space open to the wilderness, a place to look out and to be looked upon. The climb up to the observation post creates a sense of achievement, a reward of spectacular views of the french valley and surrounding mountains. The heightened wind blowing past your ears, almost a feeling of a bird about to take flight into the sky.
