Tunnel

Project Description:

The Williamson tunnels are a extensive subterranean excavations created in the early 19th century underneath Liverpool city centre. This project was to investigate the heritage relationship with the site and create a new learning excavation centre as current excavation still continue to explore the extent of the tunnels. The main driver in this scheme was the concept of a vertical tunnel which would act as a landmark and visual education centre for tourists. The project is split into two buildings work/learn with the tower being the main focal point in the courtyard connecting the two. To engage the local volunteers excavation material would be used to create the tower, linking the building back to its original purpose the Williamson tunnels.
